Rabbit Nail Clipping

May 25th, 2008 by admin

Your rabbit will need her nails clipped fairly often, and you have two choices when it comes to clipping nails: you can take her to the vet (though, this admittedly will get expensive,) or you can cut them yourselves. (We very strongly recommend having a veterinarian show you how to do it the first time to avoid mistakes).

You can find specialized rabbit nail clippers at any pet store like PetSmart.

(Rabbit clippers are very similar to the clippers sold to trim cat’s nails - so you can use the same pair clipping your kitties’ nails.) Or, many people report success in using the same old-fashioned nail clippers you use to cut your own nails.

Before you clipping your bunny’s nails be sure you have the clippers, some flour (just in case you hit a vein,) and a towel to wrap your bunny in, making it difficult for her to squirm and try to get away. The more you’re clipping your bunny’s nails, the more you’ll discover what works best for you and your rabbit.

There are several ways you can cut your rabbits nails. First, if there is someone else with you, you can have that person securely hold your bunnywrapped in a towel (to prevent scratching) while you’re clipping the nails. You can also sit the bunny on the floor, gripping her between your legs. This makes it easy to clip the nails on the front paws, but you’ll need to be creative to cut her back feet nails.

When clipping the nails, look for the line that indicates a vein. If your bunny has dark nails, you may not be able to see it. If you can see it, do not clip into the vein or beyond. If you cannot see the vein, simply cut a very little bit. This way, you won’t accidentally hit a vein; however, you might have to cut the nails more often.

Birthday Gift for Your Pet Rabbit

May 23rd, 2008 by admin

Celebrating our pet rabbit’s birthday is something that we should not forget. Our pet rabbits are the love of our lives, so how could we forget them when they have loved us unconditionally through good and bad times? They stole our hearts from the very first day, and our love for them continues to grow stronger and greater each moment.

According to a recent survey, more than nine million American will purchase a Valentine’s gift for their pets, but maybe not a Birthday gift! Nevertheless, the statistics shows that our pets are very important! But, why is that so?

Let’s focus on our pet rabbit’s presence in our lives. Our pet rabbits are our companion and friends. They fill our lives by being our natural companions and offer us lots of joy, love, loyalty and affection. And, they bring a bundle of happiness to us. In short, our pet rabbits are great, positive companions in our lives. Yes, our pet rabbits hold a crucial role in our lives and they do it wonderfully!

Thus, it makes logical sense to celebrate our pet rabbit’s birthday! But, how do we do that?

Here are few suggestions for making your pet rabbit’s birthday a momentous and wonderful occasion:

1. A Family Day. For home bound bunnies, a Family Day, lounging around the house, will go a long way. Your pet rabbit doesn’t have demanding needs; it needs your love, affection, attention and care. So, if you devote some time to care for your honey bunny, you will have shined its day!

2. A Bunny Play Date. Your pet rabbit won’t be able to contain its joys when you are devoting your time to it - let it out from the cage and let is run and hop around excitedly! Let it turns and thumps!

3. A Special Birthday Meal Treat. Food is a favorable thing in your rabbit’s mind. Be sure to include his favorite food and some special treats like carrots, cauliflower and turnip. Whole meal bread that has been dried in the oven until hard will help to exercise your rabbit’s teeth!

4. A Birthday’s Gift to commemorate the Special Day. A new lavish toy, paper bags, cardboard rolled from paper towels, dried pinecones or special treat will surely excite your pet rabbit!

My name is Alice Andrew and I love rabbits. :)

I have been a rabbit lover since I’m a kid! My daddy bought me my first bunny, a little Dwarf Lop as my 8th birthday present! Since that, I make every effort to learn how to take care of rabbits and have gone through many learning experiences. I read many interesting rabbit books, chat with rabbit owners, breeders and rabbit lovers to gain more knowledge. Now, I know what works and what doesn’t work to train a happy rabbit! :) Currently, I own a Polish, named Snow White! She’s as white and pure as snow! :)

Eggs-travagant Eggs

May 17th, 2008 by admin

Wonderfully simple to do and oh so impressive!

You don’t need a $40 Easter egg decorating kit with pages of instructions to impress your family and guests this Easter - achieve sophisticated elegance with colors taken directly from nature. Simply decorated from a myriad of plants and flowers, you can create a beautiful range of natural colors and textures. Try this technique - it’s simple enough to do with young children.

Ingredients

Gather together eggs, an enamel or stainless steel pot, vinegar, cheesecloth, a rubber band, and plant materials such as onionskins, blueberries, pecan hulls, parsley, beets or dandelions.

Directions

1. To prepare the dye bath, fill a pot with two or three cups of plant material. Barely cover it with water (more plant material produces stronger colors.) Simmer for at least 30 minutes. Add water and stir as needed. The dyes can be made several days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Strain and heat the dye before using it.

2. Use hard-boiled or blown out eggs. Carefully wash the eggs with soap and water. Allow them to dry. Wipe the eggs with vinegar.

3. To decorate the eggs, moisten small leaves and grasses, one at a time. Press them firmly against the egg. Hold them in place by wrapping the eggs in a six-inch square of cheesecloth or nylon pantyhose. Pull the cloth tight against the egg and secure it with a rubber band. Immerse the egg in a container of warm dye. Some dyes are stronger than others. The process may take only a few moments or several hours. Dyes derived from yellow onionskin, red onionskin, and blueberries all provide quick results.

4. Unwrap the eggs, drain, and let them dry upright.

What a magical and unpredictable process. Each lustrous egg is a unique surprise. Some of our favorites were the results of happy accidents. Enjoy discovering!
